While I was cooking dinner a few days ago (poblano chicken taquitos to be exact), I overheard my son giving a training lesson to our dog a few feet away.

“Sit. Lay. Roll Over! SIT. LAY. ROLL OVER! Mom! He’s not listening!”

I hollered back while rolling taquitos, “You’re giving him too many things to do at once. Try breaking the commands into three steps instead of asking him to do all three at once.”

It worked. Our sweet Aussiedoodle passed his training session with flying colors because the trainer and he slowed down with each step.

Picture of the happy trainer, happy dog, and happy mama.

Business is a lot like that, too.

How often do you try to eat the elephant at once instead of stuffing a napkin in the front of your blouse and pulling out a knife and fork?

If you’re like most entrepreneurs, myself included, pretty often.

I frequently catch myself with my eyes set on a big goal and then slamming the gas pedal down to reach it by trying to tackle all of the pieces in one afternoon.

This is where burnout happens.

It’s also where feelings of anxiety, defeat, frustration, and imposter syndrome rear their ugly heads. When we don’t immediately get the result we’re seeking, we yell out in frustration like my son did, “It’s not working!”

Yet, often, when we take a step back and break things out into smaller pieces, we find that we’re making more progress than we did when trying to perform all of the tricks in one fell swoop.
