Yesterday marked the last day of first and third grade for our boys, which means we’re officially in summer!

What a crazy year it’s been. Last year at this time I was balling my eyes out as my youngest graduated Kindergarten. Our family was prepared to send our kids to public school for the first time, and we were admittedly excited. Families move to our area for our high-rated school district.

But, what we found wasn’t exactly what we bargained for. Far from it. PE was consistently taken away from my active boys. New words, including racial slurs, were introduced into our household, and when pressed, the school’s response was, “Oh yeah, those have been going around,” as if it was the flu.

Meanwhile, we were exhausted from the constant on-the-go push to let our kids play soccer and go to jiujitsu. We were saying no to trips because school was in session.

These and many other reasons led us to shift our ‘lil family to homeschool before Thanksgiving break and I don’t ever see us going back.

Perhaps the best part of this shift is seeing our boys LOVE learning again. Sure, we struggle at times, but they’re curious now. Enthusiastic about life. They’re excited about trying new things, experimenting, and even failing.

So, this summer is going to be filled with education too — not because we have to push the worksheets but because we want to. And that desire is making all the difference.

As we move into summer, here are some extra links to things that have been lighting us up this week:

  • I’m currently obsessed with my weighted vest for workouts and walks — and likely will be buying one that looks less tactical very soon.

  • I made this jalapeno cheddar sourdough bread this week, and it was so good.

  • Snagged my copy of this book that was released this week and it’s our June asynchronous book club selection inside the Homeschool Flow!

  • Honored to be an “Exceptional Person to Know” in this week’s Public School Exit newsletter!

  • I’m excited to welcome more parents to The Homeschool Flow. If you want access to more adult conversations that don’t require you to put another thing on your calendar, join us! And if cost is preventing you from diving in and making these vital connections, hit reply, and I’ll give you special access. No questions asked. :)

P.S. Do you manage a co-op, formal or informal? If you bring in 5 moms, you all get a 50% discount inside the Homeschool Flow.
