I wrote a little poem for you. Ready for this masterpiece?
Hocus PocusPut the electionOut of focus
While I might not be the modern-day Ernest Hemingway (who, fun fact, I’m distantly related to), I do think those three lines sum up the feeling people have this Halloween.
We’re tired of the political ads. We’re tired of the name-calling. But mostly, we’re just tired.
Election fatigue is real, but the most frightful part is why it’s so tiring.
So many voters are scared of the outcome, and that fear has spilled over into other areas—including buying behaviors.
Sales are much slower because people wait to spend their money until they know who will come into office.
Pair this with the upcoming holiday season and the natural tendency to wait for Black Friday sales to start hitting, and you might start to feel scared stiff about the state of your business.
But what if I said you don’t have to live through the weekend covered in goosebumps and fear?
Sure, this season might feel extra spooky, but there’s actually beauty in the chaos and rhetoric.
All that noise allows you to cut through the negativity and shine a light on what’s possible. Through a more uplifting content strategy, you can ease your buyers' worries and help them see what’s realistically possible in your part of their world. When you make your messaging hyper-specific to their desires, that specificity will drown out big-picture global talk, letting them feel more hopeful today.
And even if buyers don’t purchase immediately, they’ll latch onto your message of silver linings and optimism. Your content will feel more refreshing than plunging your face into a tub full of apples (a practice I still can’t believe I did as a kid – did you bob for apples?).
Step by step, post by post, newsletter by newsletter, you’ll lay the foundation for your buyers to want to work with you as soon as we know who will be president, what Black Friday offers are coming our way, and how you can help them get into this next season with more ease, flow, and abundance.
In Halloween words, your content can be the exit door from the political haunted house we’re living in until next Tuesday, allowing your readers to escape the madness.
And as for you, the business owner who also needs an escape, consider this famous quote by Charlie Munger:
“It’s not about the big picture. It’s about the work on your desk. Do the work in front of you and do it well.”
It’s easy to get sucked into the news vortex. I do every day. But for your sanity and mine, it’s time that we set a time limit on how much we consume over the next week and focus on the work in front of us.
Instead of drowning in the big picture what-ifs, like whether we’ll go to World War III or if the aunt you’re looking forward to seeing at Thanksgiving is “garbage” or not, look at the work in front of you.
Focus on the people who matter to you—your friends, family, and consumers who have trusted you.
Focus on your products and make them the best version for your current and future buyers.
Focus on the platforms you’re using and the simplicity they’re bringing to your world, shedding anything that isn’t supporting your growth or is stealing your attention.
Instead of being scared stiffless, let’s hype ourselves up on sweets and get some sh!t done!
People need your voice now more than ever. You're stunting your business's growth by silencing yourself because of a sea of other political noise.
Because the moment when it feels like people aren’t listening is the moment you need to speak louder and share the messages of positive support you can deliver.
