It’s Friday. How are you doing? How’s your summer slowly rolling along? How’s your world feeling right now?

To be frank, over here it feels like everything is teetering on the brink of chaos in the world. I’ve never been more thankful to have every excuse to focus on the nuclear family and building up our household.

That’s especially true because this Sunday is Father’s Day! We’re celebrating a little early this week because my husband has to work that day, so my kids deemed this Father’s Week. I’m here for it. To kick things off, we grabbed some Birria Tacos from Costco and WOW were they a hit!

Those pre-prepped meals in the back of the store are *my* treat to myself every time we go because we don’t need to cook as soon as we get home. Plus, does anyone else feel like, despite dropping $$$ at Costco every time, you get home and still don’t have enough food for homemade meals? Just me?

You’ll also see another one of my husband’s gifts in this picture — the Ninja Countertop Oven* that folds up. Our counter space is feeling more spacious again!

I mentioned this above, but the news this week feels very heavy. It got me thinking. How do you handle tough conversations with your kids?

Part of homeschooling allows us to be the ones to share the good AND the not-so-good. The conversations surrounding big current events can feel harder at times, especially if you have younger kids. Here are a few tips that help us during these uneasy times:

  • Don’t sugarcoat the news. Let them know what’s happening in a way that you know they can understand and handle

  • Remember that us, as humans, weren’t ever meant to live in this 24/7 news cycle. Turn the TV off to save your kids and yourself from going crazy with worry

  • End the day with notes of gratitude for what you have at home to keep the focus on what you and they can control. It’s hard enough growing up and feeling that world keep expanding. Grounding yourself in home is healthy.

Back to something fun! In light of Father’s Day being this weekend, here’s a cute ‘lil idea you can make with your kids if you’re searching for last minute gifts — snack jars.

I like this one because your husband can take it with him to work or into the homeschool room for easy snacking.

Or, if you have a dad with a sweet tooth, you can try this jar. And if your kids are into Legos, turn it into a ‘lil STEM project and have them make a lego candy dispenser for dad.

Continuing on the Father’s Day theme, here’s one of our Father’s Day breakfasts (or a fun weekend breakfast) — Huevos Rancheros.

There are so many recipes out there for these, but the one from my Magnolia Table* cookbook is my favorite. If you’re looking for another Father’s Day gift for someone who loves to cook, this is a great addition to any kitchen! I use all three volumes ALL the time.

Probably one of the hardest parts of homeschooling is giving up a source of income. I’ve had a crazy year in my entrepreneurial journey, uprooting numerous projects, ideas, and clients, so that we could have the space we need to homeschool.

Through all that uprooting, I’ve decided to double down on newsletters. They’re THE way to connect with people and discover fresh ideas for building products that you can deliver without Zoom calls, phone calls, or in-person meetings.

If you have a story to share, knowledge to share, or ideas to rally a group of people around, starting your newsletter is super simple. I use Substack for this, and it’s free to get started.

BONUS: I’m considering offering private email-based mentorship to help fellow homeschooling parents start their newsletters to earn some extra side income. Is that something you’d be interested in? Reply with 🕺 and let me know!

If you’re running a business while you homeschool, you have a prime opportunity to teach your children work ethics and financial responsibility while hiring them in your business! And did you know that you can also get those payments you make to your kids written off on your taxes?

Penny Rose is an expert at helping entrepreneurial parents hire their kids in a way that makes financial sense. If you haven’t yet, subscribe to her newsletter for tips and advice for maximizing your time, education plan, and finances by hiring your son or daughter, and also getting help with your workload. Double win!

That’s it for this week! Unless… you’re a member! Upgrade to paid and let’s keep these important conversations going.
