Welcome to the new column, Feature Friday, where every week, I’ll introduce you to a Roadpreneur who is building a business that lets them RV more often (maybe even full-time). Through these stories, you’ll see sparks of inspiration that can be woven into your own journey and go behind the scenes of other people’s businesses that are successfully growing from the road.

This week, I’m thrilled to introduce you to Joshua Sheehan from RV Gear and Far and Gander Flight. Joshua and I first got connected when he invited me to appear as a guest on the RV Entrepreneur podcast when he was the host. Since then, we’ve gotten to know each other in person at the RV LIFE Entrepreneur Summit (pictured below) and have connected on a variety of projects in between. He was top of my list to invite to contribute to this column because he has so much experience and wisdom to share. Meet, Joshua.

What is your name and what do you do?

My name is Joshua Sheehan and I am the creator behind RV Gear & Far - a social media brand sharing RVing tips, DIY projects and gear reviews on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok & Facebook where we make the “RV” part easier so YOU can adventure more!

How do you seek adventure on the open road?

I seek adventure on the road by intentionally exploring different types of locations - sometimes we’ll enjoy the solitude of boondocking and getting into more remote locations; other times we enjoy being in a vibrant RV park and hanging out at the lake with friends while having potluck meals and enjoying the amenities closer to a city or destination. The amazing thing about RV life is you get to “Choose your own adventure” and there is such flexibility in that while still having the routine and familiarity of bringing your home with you!

What inspired you to start this business?

I was inspired to start RV Gear and Far after growing my first YouTube channel- Gander Flight. I realized that I wanted to make more RV content and that I could showcase that content better on a dedicated RV channel so I started the second brand last summer and have been creating there since!

What do you like most about your business?

I enjoy the creative process and getting to answer questions. Often, my videos and content are inspired by questions I personally have - for example, Which of these two RV gadgets would work best for me? - would then allow me to use the gear, create content highlighting each piece, and then compare and contrast them - with the goal to answer as many questions about a specific piece of gear or RV process as possible - ideally answering questions viewers didn’t even know to ask :)

What’s going through your audience’s mind when they come to you for help?

Typically it is something along the lines of “How do I do xyz?”, “What's the difference between product A and product B?” or “How can I fix this pain point with a DIY solution?”

How have you designed your business to run while you roam?

Yes - most of the business is residual income through advertisements native to each platform and affiliate link sales.

What challenges have you faced by running a business from the road?

Time management is by far the hardest for me - living, working, and exploring all in a small space with a young family can be difficult just in terms of having physical space to work without distraction - plus we’re usually someplace amazing so spending time on the computer to work is often a trade-off to squeezing another epic hike.

If you had to start over again, what would you do differently?

Super tactical to a video creator - but I’d record any videos that might ever be used as an example, or B-Roll footage, in at least 4K 60fps so that I can easily zoom in or slow it down without compromising quality - I have quite a bit of footage from early on that wasn’t and it sometimes makes it difficulty to reuse as examples.

What’s the biggest compliment you’ve ever received?

I really enjoy the comments that indicate someone has watched multiple videos on said topic and mine presented a perspective or aspect they had not yet heard elsewhere. :)

What are you getting excited about right now?

2024 camping season - I have a TON of videos on my to-do list and am really excited to get them published this spring. The separation of Gander Flight and RV Gear & Far has really clarified my lens on RV content and is making it much easier to share my tips, projects, and reviews with folks who will gain value from them.

Where can we connect with you?
